OCTOPUS database (v.2)

Abstract: Abstract. OCTOPUS v.2 is an Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) compliant web-enabled database that allows users to visualise, query, and download cosmogenic radionuclide, luminescence, and radiocarbon ages and denudation rates associated with erosional landscapes, Quaternary depositional landforms, and archaeological records, along with ancillary geospatial (vector and raster) data layers. The database follows the FAIR (Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reuse) data principles and is based on open… Show more

“…A Kernel Density Estimation (KDE) was determined from optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and thermo luminescence (TL) ages from lacustrine beach and shoreline ages and uvial overbank and channel ages was from the two largest river systems in Australia, the Murray Darling Basin and the Lake Eyre Basin. Discontinuous archive ages were accessed from the OCTOPUS database v.2 (https://octopusdata.org/) (72). Continuous lacustrine proxy records (n = 35) were analyzed for the period 22-8ka using the same methodology as Cadd et al (5).…”

“…Bridging these very different time spans, the production of cosmogenic nuclides in the upper few meters of the Earth's surface rocks provides a powerful tool for quantifying denudation rates that integrate the last 10 2 -10 5 years (Gosse & Phillips, 2001;von Blanckenburg, 2005). In river catchments, this technique is <30-years old, but the global database is growing and covers more and more different climatic and geodynamic contexts (Codilean et al, 2018(Codilean et al, , 2022Portenga & Bierman, 2011). For the period 1995-2021, 4,425 measurements of in situ produced 10 Be concentrations are included in the Octopus database (Codilean & Munack, 2021), leading to a worldwide median value of about 70 mm kyr −1 , and ranging from a few mm kyr −1 to a few mm yr −1 as in highly dynamic settings like Taiwan (e.g., Derrieux et al, 2014).…”

“…Cosmogenic 10 Be produced in quartz has proven to be the best suited technique for studying the denudation of Earth's continental topography over millennial timescales (Schaefer et al, 2022). Indeed, 10 Be-based denudation rates have now been determined in more than 4,000 river basins-mostly from mountain landscapes-providing us with a large inventory of denudation rate estimates (Codilean et al, 2018(Codilean et al, , 2022. The concentration of 10 Be nuclides in river sediments is proportional to their exposure age, with the highest 10 Be concentrations reflecting longer exposure time and, consequently, slower denudation (Granger & Schaller, 2014;Schaefer et al, 2022).…”

“…Atmospheric pressure was calculated via interpolation from the NCEP2 reanalysis data (Compo et al, 2011). For consistency with the denudation rates compiled in the OCTOPUS database (Codilean et al, 2018(Codilean et al, , 2022, we applied topographic shielding corrections to our data. The latter was calculated from the same DEM using the method of Codilean (2006) with Δθ = 8° and Δϕ = 5°.…”
