Octave-spanning emission across the visible spectrum from single crystalline 1,3,5,7-tetrakis-(p-methoxyphenyl)adamantane

Abstract: Sustainable efficient light emitters based solely on elements-of-hope are needed to replace current compounds based on less-abundant materials. Functionalized diamondoids are a potential solution for this challenge, as a prototypical example offers efficient, octave-spanning emission across the visible spectrum in their single-crystalline form. Its large quantum efficiency increases towards higher-than-ambient temperatures to beyond 7%. The stability beyond 200 °C renders such functionalized diamondoids as sus… Show more

“…As a general feature, all clusters showing WLE are characterized by strong optical nonlinearities of second and third order, at least as strong as that of the crystalline ferroelectrics. 309,571,[642][643][644][645][646]650,651 The optical nonlinearities feature high peaks and low dips at which the optical coefficients are almost quenched, as seen by the example in Fig. 28 for the prototypical AdPh 4 .…”

“…The optical response of a wide class of adamantane-based clusters and cluster aggregates has been calculated from rst principles in recent years. 309,571,[642][643][644][645] The calculations show that all adamantane-based clusters are characterized by a nonlinear optical response with the same structure, as long as they have the same ligand eld. For example, a prominent peak above 2 eV followed by a dip and a second peak is common to all adamantane-based cores with phenyl ligands.…”

“…Adamantane is a highly symmetrical, rigid hydrocarbon that may be considered the smallest three-dimensional subunit of the diamond lattice. Substituted adamantanes are used to prepare cyclophanes, 1 2 3 4 to obtain materials for the storage and capture of small molecules from the liquid phase, 2 porous materials, 5,6 optical materials, 7 8 or as active pharmaceutical ingredients. 9 10 Further, adamantanes are interesting building blocks for erecting designed nanostructures 11 12 13 14 15 or hydrogen-bonded networks.…”
