Currently, there is a tendency to use Islamic Geometric Patterns (IGPs) as important identities and cultural elements of building design in the Middle East. Despite high demand, lack of information about the potential of IGPs principles have led to formal inspiration in the design of existing buildings. Many research studies have been carried out on the principles of IGPs. However, comprehensive studies relating to new possibilities, such as structure-based, sustainable-based, and aesthetic-based purposes, developed by computer science and related technologies, are relatively rare. This article reviews the state-of-the-art knowledge of IGPs, provides a survey of the main principles, presents the status quo, and identifies gaps in recent research directions. Finally, future prospects are discussed by focussing on different aspects of the principles in accordance with collected evidence obtained during the review process.

A particular mosaic at the Darb-e Imam mausoleum in Isfahan has caused some controversy 10 years ago when it was claimed to exhibit quasi-periodic properties and that it was 500 years old. The technical part of this claim has been disputed (and refuted) by several authors. The date, 1453, also a key part of the press coverage that medieval Islamic artisans did advanced mathematics 500 years before the West, has not been challenged. We argue that the panel in question dates from the end of the Safavid period (1715-1717). Techniques developed during the Safavid period seem to be wrongly attributed to the fifteenth century.

Using the definition of quasiperiodic function as a motivation, we introduce the idea of quasiperiodic music and detail the composition process of a quasiperiodic music piece, Raindrops in A minor. We also discuss connections between quasiperiodic music and other works of music theory and composition that make use of aperiodic order or periodic order with large periods, such as Lindenmayer systems, Vuza canons, Messiaen's Quatuor pour la Fin du Temps, and the phase music of Steve Reich.
