Octadecyltrichlorosilane‐Modified Superhydrophobic‐Superoleophilic Stainless Steel Mesh for Oil‐Water Separation

Abstract: Recently, oil‐water separation has become an important topic due to its increasing commercial demand. Here, in this study, a simple technique to prepare superhydrophobic‐superoleophilic mesh for oil‐water separation is reported. The pre‐cleaned stainless steel mesh is modified by octadecyltrichlorosilane (ODS) through solution immersion method. The modified mesh shows the water contact angle (WCA) of 158 ± 2° and oil contact angle (OCA) of 0°. The prepared superhydrophobic‐superoleophilic mesh effectively sepa… Show more

“…Also, different types of low surface energy materials have been utilized to impart superhydrophobicity to metal meshes. A common approach is to utilize silane agents (such as octadecyltrichlorosilane, 22 hexadecyltrimethoxysilane, 23 peruorodecyltriethoxysilane, 24 1H,1H,2H,2H-peruorodecyl trimethoxysilane, 25 etc.). Although effective in lowering the surface energy, silane agents tend to be costly and, in case of uorinated alkylsilanes, the health and environmental concerns pose serious limitations.…”

“…The spontaneous directional transport of microdroplets has wide application prospects, such as human health management of moisture and heat, microchemical reactions, , oil–water separation, biomedicine, etc. Compared with the active transport modes of microdroplets that require external energy, such as electric field drive, , magnetic field drive, and light drive, , the spontaneous directional transport of microdroplets requires no external energy supply and does not require specific particles to be mixed in the droplet, which fulfills the needs of green development.…”
