Ochratoxin A production by Penicillium thymicola

Abstract: Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a mycotoxin produced by some Aspergillus and Penicillium species that grow on economically important agricultural crops and food products. OTA is classified as Group 2B carcinogen and is potently nephrotoxic, which is the basis for its regulation in some jurisdictions. Using high resolution mass spectroscopy, OTA and ochratoxin B (OTB) were detected in liquid culture extracts of Penicillium thymicola DAOMC 180753 isolated from Canadian cheddar cheese. The genome of this strain was sequenc… Show more

“…likely to be a stable contributor to high OTA level in liquorice. However, none of these species are considered OTA producers [47,59]. This should be confirmed using proper chromatographic detection of OTA and accurate identification of the fungi.…”

“…Both P. verrucosum and P. viridicatum are able to produce the mycotoxin citrinin, but P. verrucosum is also a producer of the mycotoxin ochratoxin ( 3 , 4 ). Nowadays, P. verrucosum belongs to the series Verrucosa within the section Fasciculata together with Penicillium nordicum and Penicillium thymicola ( 5 , 6 ). P. verrucosum is psychrotolerant and occurs mainly in moderate-temperature regions, such as Northern Europe, North America, Canada, and parts of South America.…”
