Background Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most commonly recorded diseases in clinical practice. Vibration therapy has been suggested for the treatment of knee OA. The purpose of the study was to determine the impact of vibrations of variable frequency and low amplitude on pain perception and mobility in patients suffering from knee OA. Methods Thirty-two participants were allocated into two groups – Group 1 (oscillatory cycloidal vibrotherapy-OCV) and Group 2—control (sham therapy). The participants were diagnosed with moderate degenerative changes in the knee (grade II based on the Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) Grading Scale). Subjects received 15 sessions of vibration therapy and sham therapy respectively. Pain, range of motion, and functional disability were assessed through Visual Analog Scale (VAS), Laitinen questionnaire, goniometer (ROM – range of motion), timed up and go test (TUG) and Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS). Measurements were taken at baseline, after the last session and four weeks after the last session (follow up). T-test and U-Mann Whitney test compare baseline characteristics. The Wilcoxon and ANOVA tests compared mean VAS, Laitinen, ROM, TUG and KOOS. The significant P-value was less than 0.05. Results After 3 weeks (15 sessions) of vibration therapy, reduced the sensation of pain and improved mobility was recorded. There was a more significant improvement in the vibration therapy group than the control group in pain alleviation on VAS scale (p < 0.001), on Laitinen scale (p < 0.001), knee ROMs flexions (p < 0.001) and TUG (p < 0.001) at the last session. KOOS score with pain indicator, symptoms, activities of daily living, function in sport and recreation and knee related quality of life improved more in the vibration therapy group than the control group. Effects maintained up to 4 weeks in vibration group. No adverse events were reported. Conclusions Our data demonstrated that the use of vibrations of variable frequency and low amplitude in patients with the knee OA is a safe and effective therapy. It is recommended to increase the number of treatments performed, primarily in patients with degeneration II° according to the KL classification. Trial registration Prospectively registered on ANZCTR (ACTRN12619000832178). Registered on 11 June 2019.

It is characterised by the destruction of joint cartilage and the presence of lesions in the subchondral bone, synovial membrane, joint capsule, and periarticular structures. OA damages the anatomical joint structure and impairs joint function. Aim: To analyse the effects of physical therapy procedures used during a two-week rehabilitation cycle on patients with OA. M aterial and Methods: The study involved 25 patients (19 women and 6 men aged 51 to 83 years) treated with electrotherapy, laser therapy, low-frequency alternating magnetic fields, ultrasound therapy, and kinesiotherapy. Rehabilitation outcomes were assessed with a survey questionnaire created by the authors and a VAS scale. Results: All study patients experienced pain reduction or elimination and an improvement in physical fitness after physical therapy. Conclusion: 1.Knee osteoarthritis is a clinical and social problem. 2. The physical therapy procedures used in the study considerably reduced pain in OA patients, both at rest and during movement, and resulted in improved physical fitness. 3. Seeing that a very large group of study patients with gonarthrosis declares no physical activity and avoids exercise due to pain, it is important to highlight the benefits of physical activity in OA prevention. 4. Seeing that the mean BMI in the study group usually indicated overweight or obesity, it is important to highlight the effects of a healthy lifestyle and diet in OA prevention.

Modification of Patients’ Sensitivity to Galvanic Current After the Administered Systemic Cryotherapy

Aim: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the sensitivity of patients to galvanic current after systemic cryotherapy. Material and Methods: Study group: 77 physiotherapists – hospital employees, aged 21-64 (AVG 29.4±9.5). The sensitivity was evaluated four times: before and immediately after the systemic cryotherapy procedure (1 session, 2 minutes, temperature -120°C), after exercising on a vertical cycle ergometer (20 minutes) and 4 hours after the procedure. The intensity of the galvanic current, which caused a slight tingling, was recorded. Two electrode placements were used: longitudinal on the upper limbs and transverse over the knee joints. Results: Statistical analysis revealed that the mean sensitivity to the galvanic current measured on both upper limbs or over the knee joints increases statistically significantly after systemic cryotherapy treatments. This effect persists even after 4 hours (Friedman’s ANOVA, p<0.001). Statistically significant increases in sensitivity to galvanic current were found compared to initial values for each pair of measurements, irrespective of electrode placement and test position (Wilcoxon test, p<0.01). The increase in sensitivity according to the measuring position concerned 68.8; 63.6; 72.7% of the participants on the left upper limb, on the right 61.0; 68.8; 74.0%, over the left knee joint 61.0; 68.8; 72.7% and over the right 58.4, 75.3 and 80.5% of the subjects in the study group. Conclusions: 1. After the administered systemic cryotherapy, sensitivity to galvanic current increases in most patients. 2. The increase in sensitivity to galvanic current depends on the time difference between treatments and is individually variable.
