Oceanological Conditions in the Area of Soth Kuril Islands According to Ship and Satellite Observations

Abstract: The materials of satellite observations of the sea surface temperature in the study area (1998–2020) were also analyzed by statistical methods and by decomposition according to the EOF. The amplitude of the averaged curve of the annual variation of the ocean surface temperature (SST) as a whole for the region was estimated, which was 7° (the contribution of the semiannual component with an amplitude of 1°С is small), as well as the most significant anomalies that reached 4°С in cold August 2002 and 3°С in warm… Show more

“…This indicates that in the area of the Nemuro Peninsula, which crosses this track, diurnal shelf waves are not exist. This excludes the possibility of the existence of barotropic diurnal shelf waves in the area between the Lesser Kuril Ridge and the northeastern coast of Nemuro Island as assumed in (Shevchenko & Romanov, 2008).…”

“…The basis for this study were the results of tidal harmonic analysis at the points on TOPEX/Poseidon satellite ground tracks, both the original ones (1992-2002) and shifted by half the inter-track distance (2002-2005) (Shevchenko & Romanov, 2008). Despite the rather short series in the second case, the calculation of tidal wave's amplitudes and phases turned out to be quite reliable, at least in areas without data gaps due to the ice cover (including oceanic shelf of South Kuril Islands).…”
