Ocean Responses to Typhoon Namtheun Explored with Argo Floats and Multiplatform Satellites

Abstract: Argo salinity and temperature profiles, along with other sea surface measurements, were used to explore the impacts of Typhoon Namtheun (2004) on the ocean. Namtheun took local enthalpy heat from the sea (0.39-0.7 × 10 8 J m −2 ), cooled the sea surface water as a result of vertical mixing (maximum 3-4°C) and produced heavy precipitation over the sea (100-180 mm). During this time, the vast latent heat released (2.6-4.4 × 10 8 J m −2 ) by the precipitation made a larger contribution to the typhoon's energy bud… Show more

“…Twenty‐two percentage of the Argo pairs observed significant cooling of <−1°C, and only 7% of the Argo pairs observed the strong cooling of <−2°C (Table ). Such strong cooling had been observed in previous studies [ Lin et al ., ; Sun et al ., ] due to the unstable thermodynamic structure in the CEs [ Walker et al ., ; Sun et al ., ]. The mean of all cooling samples was −0.86°C, and the rest 33% of Argo pairs observed SST warming with a mean of 0.526°C.…”

“…Argo program automatically collected nearly in situ temperature profiles in the upper 2000-m global ocean with an interval of a few days and provided a unique opportunity to study ocean subsurface responses to translating TCs (Park et al 2011;Sun et al 2012;Vissa et al 2012;Wu and Chen 2012). Unlike these studies which were all focused on the open ocean, the present study will be focused on understanding the subsurface temperature changes of the Kuroshio by means of 10-year satellite SST images and Argo data during the periods of TCs' passage.…”

“…Sun et al (2014) illustrated the effects of super typhoons on the 40 strength, spatial area, and kinetic energy of COEs. Some observations 43 have found the long-lived biophysical response in COEs by remote sensing and Argo floats (Sun 44 et al 2010;Sun et al 2012;Walker et al 2014); however, the dynamic processes need to be 45 investigated further by numerical model.
