Ocean model skill assessment in the NW Mediterranean using multi-sensor data

Abstract: This paper showcases the one year-long (2014) multi-parameter skill assessment of Iberia-Biscay-Ireland (IBI) operational ocean forecasting system. The investigation is focused on a specific subdomain in the Northwestern Mediterranean where several observational networks encompassing both in situ and remote sensing instruments are available. This region is relevant since it includes two harbours and a marine protected area, the Ebro River Delta. Class-1 and class-2 skill metrics are used in concert to quantita… Show more

“…Despite this improvement, WMOP clearly underestimates the intensity of the NC as measured by the Ebro delta HFR. This behavior was also observed by Lorente et al (2016) using the Iberia-Biscay-Ireland (IBI) regional circulation model (Sotillo et al 2015), a NEMO-based model from PdE, which has a similar spatial resolution as WMOP. These authors relate these shortcomings to the low resolution and realism of the atmospheric forcing used in their model, which is the same as in WMOP.…”

“…HFRs provide researchers with a wealth of surface current data that can be used as benchmark for the rigorous skill assessment of operational circulation models in key coastal areas (Cosoli et al, 2013;Guihou et al, 2013;Lorente et al, 2016). A number of publications already exists on the assimilation of surface HFR data (Breivik and Saetra, 2001;Paduan and Shulman, 2004;Barth et al, 2008Barth et al, , 2011Ren et al, 2015b;Sperrevik et al, 2015;Stanev et al, 2015;Iermano et al, 2016, to mention only a few examples).…”
