Occurrence of venlafaxine, other antidepressants and selected metabolites in the Rhine catchment in the face of climate change

Abstract: Fate and occurrence of 4 selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, one serotonin-noradrenergic reuptake inhibitor and one noradrenergic-dopamineric reuptake inhibitor and their human metabolites were determined in a German municipal wastewater treatment plant as well as in the Rhine River and selected tributaries. The enantiomeric fractions of venlafaxine and its metabolites were not altered during wastewater treatment and were similar in all river samples underlining that no appreciable biodegradation occurs. … Show more

“…VFX and their two metabolites also showed negative removals in both campaigns, with higher concentrations after MBR treatment. These results are in accordance with previous studies in which negative elimination rates were obtained after CAS treatment [31,32]. The limited sorption to the biomass of these compounds (low solid-water distribution coefficient (K d )) and their resilience to biodegradation could explain partly this poor removal.…”

“…These values were mostly similar to the values previously reported for pharmaceuticals in river and sewage samples [48,51]. The vales of limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ), which are important for estimating the sensitivity of the methods, were calculated based on the concentrations at signal-to-noise ratios of 3 and 10 [52,53]. The estimated LOD and LOQ values for liquid samples were in ranges of 0.1-0.4 and 0.3-1.4 ng/L, respectively, but the corresponding values for solid samples appeared in larger ranges of 2.4-13 and 8.2-42 ng/kg, respectively.…”

“…More typical loads are in the 10–150 ng/l range while the predicted concentration needed in surrounding water to reach human therapeutic levels in fish is 141 ng/l for citalopram (Fick et al 2010 ). Since there are several SSRIs in active use however, the total SSRI concentration may be much higher than the concentration of a single drug will show (Schlüsener et al 2015 ; Schultz et al 2010 ; Vasskog et al 2008 ). In addition, some of the SSRI metabolites retain some SSRI effect (Hiemke and Härtter 2000 ; Pawlowski et al 1985 ), adding to the total SSRI concentration.…”
