Occurrence of South American fur seals Arctocephalus australis (Zimmermann, 1783) in San Matías Gulf, Patagonia, Argentina

Abstract: The South American fur seal, Arctocephalus australis (SAFS) population suffered a drastic reduction due to commercial exploitation during the XVIII and XIX centuries. In the last decades a population recovery was detected in the Atlantic region. However, in this region, many aspects of the ecology of the SAFS, such as the post-reproductive dispersal of individuals, the location of feeding areas, and the movements of individuals between colonies on the boundaries of its distribution, are still unknown. Here, we… Show more

“…Density dependence of somatic growth would be ultimately caused by a reduction in the per capita prey abundance (Trites and Bigg, 1992;Drago et al, 2010). However, despite the increasing population trend shown by the fur seals in recent years (Svendsen et al, 2013;Crespo et al, 2015) and the expected decreasing per capita food availability in northern Patagonia ecosystem, the diet of Aa remained unchanged during 1990e2013 (Vales, 2015). The diet of fur seals would not have changed for at least the last 2200 years (Vales, 2015).…”

“…Currently in Patagonia, sea lions maintain a continuous distribution along the coastline (Túnez et al, 2008a), whereas fur seals have been absent from various locations for most of the 20th century (Godoy, 1963). More recently, fur seals have been observed reoccupying some locations within their historical distribution, including the San Matías Gulf (Svendsen et al, 2013) and the northern coast of Santa Cruz province (Vales, 2024).…”
