Occurrence of plasmids in pathogenic strains of Nocardia

Abstract: The purpose of the present study was to determine the relative distribution of plasmids in 87 clinical isolates of Nucardia, belonging to the five major pathogenic species. A correlation between plasmid content and the site of infection within the host, resistance to antibiotics and enzymic profiles was also investigated. The plasmid extraction procedure of Kado and Liu was used. Electrophoretic analysis revealed one-to-four plasmid bands, ranging in size from <8 to >50 kb, in 27 strains (31%). Based on the nu… Show more

“…Based on the isolates tested by Provost et al (47), the incidence of plasmid-bearing strains is significantly higher among N. farcinica strains than among N. asteroides strains without a relationship between plasmid presence and any specific antibiotic resistance phenotypes. The chromosomal or plasmid location of bla FAR-1 remains to be determined.…”

“…However, extensive characterization of plasmids was not the aim of this study. Plasmid characterization was the subject of a recent study (16) which showed that pathogenic strains of Nocardia do not necessarily contain plasmids. This finding suggests that plasmids are not directly involved in virulence.…”

“…Many other indigenous circular plasmids, ranging from 8 kb to 50 kb, from Nocardia spp. have been identified and sequenced (346). However, the mechanisms of plasmid replication, inheritance, and host ranges have not yet received much attention.…”
