Occurrence of Pesticide Residues in Lebanon’s Water Resources

Abstract: Contamination of water sources by pesticides is one of the most critical environmental problems. The present work is designed to address the occurrence of 67 pesticides in the Lebanese waters. Chemical analysis was performed by a solid-phase extraction followed by a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry using programmed temperature vaporization injection. In drinking water and groundwater samples, organochlorine and organophosphate pesticides were frequently detected with a maximal sum concentration of up to 31… Show more

“…Its quality may then worsen during distribution (such as cross contamination by waste water network, rusting water conduits, and sometimes by pollution from industries and thermal power plants) to hold some levels of pesticides and high concentrations of heavy metals including arsenic. 41 , 42 Furthermore, air pollution, especially the petrochemical type, is highly incriminated for the increasing risk of BC in residential areas. 43 , 44 Petrochemical air pollution is mainly secondary to the diesel-fueled electric generators present in most Lebanese streets or buildings and to the high traffic load in Beirut as in many other overpopulated capitals.…”

“…Target and qualifier abundances were determined by the injection of individual pesticide standards under the same chromatographic conditions in full-scan mode with the mass/charge ratio ranging from m/z 50 to 550. Pesticides were identified according to the retention times, the target and qualifier ions, and the qualifier to target abundance ratios (Kouzayha et al 2013 ).…”

“…Pesticides, like herbicide, insecticide and fungicide, are necessary in modern agriculture production, but on another hand, when sprayed, most of the pesticides are eventually gotten into the soil, the air or rivers and lakes with the rain and runoff of the paddy field (Nagafuchi et al 1994;Mabury et al 1996;Kouzayha et al 2013). Nowadays pollution due to pesticides is considered as one of the major threats to freshwater ecosystems worldwide.…”
