Soil samples were collected over a year-long period along a background-urban-rural transect in Delhi, India for the analysis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), black carbon (BC), and total organic carbon (TOC) in five grain size fractions, x, in μm of 0≤x<53 (I), 53≤x<250 (II), 250≤x<500 (III), 500≤x<2000 (IV), and their sum (total: T). Maximum concentrations of PAH, BC, and TOC were observed in the smallest fraction (I) comprising silt and clay, irrespective of site or season. Results of the molecular diagnostic ratios and principal component analysis (PCA) identified coal, wood, biomass burning, and vehicular emissions as major sources of PAHs at all the three sites, while BC/TOC ratios pointed toward biomass combustion as the chief source of carbonaceous species. This work presents the first such rural-urban transect study considering PAH, BC, and TOC in soil.

The interest in atmospheric deposition by the scientific community has increased a great deal over the past several years because of its significant contribution to the pollution budget of many natural waters. Dry deposition is an effective removal mechanism for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from the atmosphere. This study focuses on the understanding of the particulate dry deposition of PCBs in urban areas. In this paper, 43 chromatographic PCB congener peaks which represent 50 individual or coeluting congeners were evaluated.The PCB dry deposition fluxes were measured using a smooth, greased, knife-edge surrogate surface holding greased Mylar strips in Chicago, IL. The average PCB dry deposition flux measured (190780 ng m À2 day À1 ) was similar to those measured in other urban areas. Ambient air samples were also collected simultaneously with flux samples. The average apparent dry deposition velocity, calculated by dividing the fluxes to the particle phase concentrations was 5.272.9 cm s À1 . This value is in good agreement with the values calculated using similar techniques.

Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Texas August 25, 2017, bringing massive rains and flooding that impacted soils in a residential neighborhood in East Houston. Trace elements, organochlorine pesticides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polybrominated diphenyl ether fire retardants (PBDEs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were determined in 24 soil samples. The highest concentrations found in soils were total PAHs, which ranged from 1,310 μg/kg to 85,700 μg/kg with a mean of 12,600 μg/kg. Analysis of specific PAH ratios indicate the source of the PAHs were dominated by pyrogenic rather than petrogenic sources. Chlordanes were detectable in the area where the likely local source is for ant control. The trace metal concentrations were below any environmental health concern concentrations but As, Cd, Hg, Pb, Se, Ag, Zn were enriched over the crustal abundance. While Hurricane Harvey was responsible for the redistribution of many contaminants, the large volume of rain and floodwater likely transported contaminants from the land areas and into the Houston Ship Channel and Galveston Bay. The findings from this study will serve as baseline data for determining the mobilization of contaminants caused by natural disasters.
