“…Groundwater pollution is influenced by many factors, such as aquifer typology and the hydraulics and flow dynamics of groundwater, pathogen structure, episodes of extreme climate, proximity of the source of pollution and system failures (Fongaro et al, 2015;Masciopinto et al, 2019). However, a natural decrease in pathogens has also been described when polluted water infiltrates an aquifer (Jurado et al, 2019). Therefore, the HAdV quantifications reported in this study indicate low, but widespread viral pollution in the urban area of Barcelona.…”

“…These results are in accordance with previous ones described in the literature. Rusiñol et al (2015) found concentrations around 10 3 GC/L for HAdV and up to 10 4 GC/L for NoV-GII in the Llobregat River, while Jurado et al (2019) describe concentrations of 10 3 GC/L for HAdV and 10 1 and 10 3 GC/L for NoV-GI and NoV-GII respectively in Besós River, whose concentrations correlated with the distance of the sampling point from the source of contamination (wastewater treatment plant). Seawater samples were collected after heavy rainfall events and the quantifications obtained for HAdV and NoV were also in accordance with those of other studies.…”

“…Besides anthropogenic activities, sometimes the hydraulic connection between the river and the groundwater can act as a conduit for microbial pollution of groundwater. For example, the shallow urban unconfined aquifer in the Besòs River Delta, Northeast Barcelona, showed the presence of human adenovirus (HAdV) in 50% of the groundwater samples, with a concentration of up to 99 GC/100 ml (Jurado et al, 2019).…”

“…Some literatures applied the related research of pathogen monitoring in summer and winter to the detection of river pathogen [6] [7] [8]. Other methods concentrate on further investigate and monitor the pathogen [9]. However, research using numerical models to enhance existing pathogen surveillance is still weak.…”
