Occurrence of microfungi as litter colonizers and endophytes in varied plant species from the Western Ghats forests, Goa, India

Abstract: In this study 30 widely distributed plant species from the Western Ghat forest in Goa were randomly selected and were studied with regard to their fungal association as endophytes and litter colonizers. This effort resulted in the recovery of more than 6500 isolates of microfungi which were assignable to 675 species of fungi belonging to 275 genera which included properly recognized Mucorales(1), Ascomycetes (18), Hyphomycetous asexual fungi (289), Coelomycetous asexual fungi (22) and undetermined taxa (77), b… Show more

“…Among the aerial regions of grass species, the culm followed by leaf harbored most anamorphic and teleomorphic ascomycetes. Similar observations were also made in other studies (Amritha et al 2012;D'souza and Bhat 2013). In addition to this, apart of fungal isolates failed to sporulate by any of the methods tested and such of them were identified as morphotypes or operational taxonomic units (OTUs).…”

“…The mitosporic fungi specifically the class of the Hyphomycota has been considered as the most predominant group in the majority of the plants colonized by the mycoendophytes, it is justified by a lot of studies (Seena and Sridhar 2004;Khan et al 2007;Mangunwardoyo et al 2012;Jena and Tayung 2013;Han et al 2013;Sharma and Kumar 2013;Shi et al 2013;Suciatmih and Rahmansyah 2013;D'souza and Bhat 2013). The nature of dominance of the ISSN 2166-0379 2020 Hyphomycetes can be assigned to their capacity to colonize their host quickly while producing abundant asexual spores (Jena and Tayung 2013).…”

“…In addition to these taxonomic studies, ecological studies were also carried out on litter colonisers and endophytes in plant species from the forests of the Western Ghats in Goa, which included palm trees species, such as Calamus thwaitesii. C. urens, and Elaeis guineensis [433,434].…”
