Occurrence of Chilli veinal mottle virus in Nicotiana tabacum in Yunnan, China

Abstract: Flue-cured tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) is an important crop in Yunnan Province, China. During a survey in July 2010, tobacco plants (N. tabacum cv. Yunyan 85) in the fields near Dali County in the northwest Yunnan Province of China had symptoms of chlorosis along leaf veins and later showed symptoms of white or brown necrosis along the veins. In 10 surveyed fields in Baizhishu Village in the city of Weishan, a commercial tobacco field (10 ha) developed virus-like disease symptoms; the incidence of affected pla… Show more

“…ChiVMV mainly infects solanaceous crops and has caused considerable economic losses to pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) production in Asia and Africa [4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12]. Moreover, it has been found highly deleterious to production of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) production since 2011 in China [13][14][15]. Tobacco plants infected with ChiVMV also present with leaf punctate necrosis or deformation, systemic necrosis of leaves and stems, and plant death finally [16,17].…”

“…The production and yield of tobacco have been seriously affected by the invasion of emerging and recurrent plant viruses with symptoms such as venial necrosis, mosaic, mottling, yellowing, ring spots, stunting, shoestring and deformation [1316]. Anhui province is in the center of China and surrounded by six other provinces.…”

“…It is a very common virus in chilli pepper (Capsicum annum L.) in east Asian countries, causing serious losses in pepper production (Ong et al, 1980;Moury et al, 2005;Wang et al, 2006;Tsai et al, 2008;Shah et al, 2009). In addition to Capsicum annuum, ChiVMV can also infect many other plants in the family Solanaceae, including Nicotiana tabacum, Solanum lycopersicum, Solanum melongena, and Datura stramonium (Tsai et al, 2008;Ding et al, 2011;Yang et al, 2013;Zhao et al, 2014;Kaur et al, 2015). Symptoms of ChiVMV infection include mosaic mottling, twisted or fallen leaves, vein banding, and reduced fruit size (Tsai et al, 2008;Gao et al, 2016).…”
