Occurrence of Candida Species Colonization in a Population of Denture-Wearing Immigrants

Abstract: Infection of the oral cavity and dentures by Candida species are frequent in denture wearers. C. albicans is the most common pathogen; however, other emerging Candida species are also responsible for this condition. Few data are available about the occurrence of Candida species in the oral cavities of denture-wearing immigrants to Italy. In this study, we compare the Candida species found in the oral mucosa and on dentures from a population of denture wearing immigrants to Italy to a matched Italian group. Ora… Show more

“…This mechanism is possibly caused by chemical substances in cigarettes that can provide nutrition for candida, local changes in epithelium that which leads to candida colonization [12,14,16], decreased antibodies in saliva and hyposalivation [8,24,32,33]. Duration and amount of smoking would have a different impact on number of the candida colonies [12].…”

“…The prevalence of candida in smokers (average 104 CFU/ml) was higher than nonsmokers (average 50 CFU/ml) [12]. Local risk factors that associated with increased prevalence of oral candidiasis and carrier were xerostomia, smoking, wearing denture, and poor oral hygiene [13,14]. Soysa and Ellepola (2005) states that smoking, whether combined with other factors or not, may be an important predisposing factor in oral candidiasis, although its pathogenesis is not known with certainty [12,15].…”

“…It is well known that diabetes considerably complicates wound healing. This is due both to peripheral vasculopathy, which induces local hypoxia with a decrease in metabolites to cells, and to a decrease in the influx and reactivity of leukocytes and consequent increase in the likelihood of infections (6)(7)(8)(9)(10)(11)(12)(13)(14).…”
