Occurrence of endocrine disrupters and selected pharmaceuticals in Aisonas River (Greece) and environmental risk assessment using hazard indexes

Abstract: According to the results, EDCs were detected in almost all samples, whereas NSAIDs were detected mainly in wastewater and in the part of the river that receives wastewater from the STP. Among the target compounds, the highest mean concentrations in the river were detected for NP (1,345 ng L(-1)) and DCF (432 ng L(-1)). Calculation of daily loads of the target compounds showed that STP seems to be the major source of NSAIDs to the river, whereas other sources contribute significantly to the occurrence of EDCs. … Show more

“…Furthermore, the respective environmental concentrations of TCS and IBU have been found in ranges of 3.0-120.0 ng L À 1 and 1.0-1417.0 ng L À 1 in river water and biologically treated wastewater [40,41], significantly lower than those used in this study (1 mg L À 1 or 10 6 ng L À 1 ). Likewise, environmental concentrations of AAP were found to be up to 109 ng L À 1 [42].…”

“…Comparing our results with data from other surface water literature, the occurrence levels of the EDCs in East Lake were at the lower end. In the Aisonas River (Greece), BPA and TCS averaged 82-122 ng/L and 22-32 ng/L, respectively (Stasinakis et al 2012). In urban riverine water of the Pearl River Delta, China, EE2 was not detected, whereas BPA levels varied from 8 to 881 ng L -1 and TCS levels from 35 to 1023 ng L -1 (Peng et al 2008).…”

“…antimicrobials, EDCs) or for specific rivers and lakes receiving wastewater, as well as specific pollution sources (e.g. hospitals) [10][11][12][13]. On the other hand, it is obvious that the risk assessment is more realistic if a large number of substances are taken into account.…”
