This work is the first record of a phytoplasma associated with homopterous phytoplasma vectors infecting some ornamental and medicinal plants in Egypt. The field study was conducted during two successive seasons 2009 and 2011 in four different locations in Giza and Cairo governorates of Egypt, one was chosen and located inside Rose garden, Fac. of Agri., Cairo Univ., and the three others were clollected from different fields located outside, in A-zohreiya gardens, Cairo governorate, Orman garden, Giza governorate and 6-October city. The infected sample of (rose, jasmine, rue, Egyptian henbane and periwinkle) plants were showing the symptom infection (phyllody, whitches-broom, little leaf and yellowing and revealed that the percentage of natural infection were (22.2, 82.7, 18.9 and 22.2%) while was 25% of Egyptian henbance virescence disease. Ten different identificated species of field-collected insects (Cicadulina bipunctella, Exitiaus taeniaticeps, Neolimus aegyptiacus, toya sp., Empoasca sp; Metatua sp; Sogatella vibix; Chiasmus sp; Balclutha sp; and Chlorotettix sp.) determined whether they can play a role in phytoplasma transmission or not. However, Sogatella vibix; Chiasmus sp; Balclutha sp. and Chlorotettix sp. were not vectors of phytoplasma. With note, the presence of the psyllid (jumping plant-lice); infesting the ornamental/medicinal crops was detected, and that is the first record in Egypt

Future risk of the maize orange leafhopper, Cicadulina bipunctata, and maize wallaby ear symptom in temperate Japan

Since the 1980s, the maize orange leafhopper, Cicadulina bipunctata, has been gradually expanding its range in east Asia associated with global warming. This leafhopper induces maize wallaby ear symptom (MWES) on young maize plants and has become a threat to forage maize production in southern parts of temperate Japan since around 2000. In this study, using predictions of future temperature and precipitation calculated from Atmosphere-Ocean Coupled General Circulation Models, the future risk of C. bipunctata expansion and MWES occurrence in Japan (spatial resolution: 1 km 2 ) was predicted. A nominal logistic regression analysis showed a significant contribution of cumulative low temperature during winter to the current distribution of C. bipunctata. The range of C. bipunctata was predicted to expand northward, particularly in Kyushu, Shikoku and the southern part of Honshu after the 2060s. Predicted intensification of MWES would reduce the efficacy of maize cultivars that are currently tolerant to MWES, in southern Kyushu in the 2020s, and in most parts of Kyushu, Shikoku and southwestern Honshu in the 2060s. These results suggest the need for measures to counter further expansion of C. bipunctata and improvement of current tolerant maize cultivars.

Orange leafhopper Cicadulina bipunctata feeding induces wallaby ear symptoms, namely growth suppression and gall formation characterized by severe swelling of leaf veins, on various Poaceae, thereby leading to low crop yields. Here, we investigated the development of wallaby ear symptoms on rice seedlings due to C. bipunctata feeding. After confirming that C. bipunctata feeding induces growth suppression and gall formation on rice seedlings, we further demonstrated that gall formation score decreased with decreasing levels of nitrogen in the medium and that C. bipunctata feeding induces the expression levels of nitrogen transporter genes. These gene expression changes may participate in the nutrient accumulation observed in galled tissues and in gall formation. In addition, these expression changes should induce growth promotion but the inhibition of gibberellin signaling by C. bipunctata feeding might be the reason why growth is suppressed. Treatment with plant growth regulators did not affect gall formation, suggesting the existence of a complex gall formation mechanism by C. bipunctata feeding.
