Occurrence of calcitonin cells and cysts in the parathyroid of the house shrew, Suncus murinus

Abstract: The present report deals with the occurrence of calcitonin cells (C cells) and cysts in the parathyroid IV of Suncus murinus. Histological preparations of the thyro-parathyroid complex reveal that (i) the parathyroid IV exhibits C cells either solitarily or in small groups (compact or follicular arrangement); (ii) the parathyroid IV also exhibits cysts (similar to those of the thyroid), the lining of these may contain either few C cells or it may be a continuous lining of C cells; (iii) the lumina of these cys… Show more

“…The calcitonin cells of vehicle-injected specimens ( fig. 2) are similar in their struc ture and behaviour as reported earlier by Swarup and Srivastav [1979] and Swarup et al [1978]. Although the C cells of both vehicle-and calcitonin-injected specimens are laden with secretory granules, the latter exhibit greater intensity up to 21 days fol lowing the treatment.…”

“…The morphology of UB remnants in rats differs in some aspects from those found in other species such as mice (Wollman and Nève, 1971a;Wollman and Hilfer, 1978), dogs (Kameda et al, 1980;Leblanc et al, 1990), shrews (Swarup et al, 1978); foxes (Srivastav and Swarup, 1982), guinea pigs (Juhl, 1981), bulls (Ljungberg and Nilsson, 1985), bisons (Sawicki and Zabel, 1997), and humans (Harach, 1988;Mizukami et al, 1994). Nevertheless, it is generally understood that in early stages of the embryonic development, in all species, these structures constitute the origin of C-cells.…”

“…There were usually two parathyroid glands in one lobe, sometimes combined with each other, and they were found at various locations in the thyroid gland. Swarp et al (1978) noted that parafollicular cells existed in the parathyroid glands of the house shrew and constituted the epithelium of cysts.…”

“…Sawicki (1975) gave identical results for the thyroid gland of the adult guinea pig. Swarp et al (1978) found that there were 10-15 parafollicular cells per 100 follicular cells in the grey mongoose. Young et al (1968) indicated that the thyroid gland contains about 1% parafollicular cells in the pig.…”
