“…This highlights potential chemical and biological risks related to wastewater reuse practices when inadequate treatment processes are applied. In the same way, Qiu et al [ 19 ] analyzed 20 antibiotics in water and sediment samples collected in the main rivers of Shenzhen, China. In this study, the identified CEC concentrations ranged from 36.5 to 1075.7 ng L −1 in 31 water samples and from 28.1 to 2728.8 ng g −1 in 31 sediment samples.…”

“…A number of studies aimed to understand the effects of ECs on aquatic biofilms 27,29,57,58 . Most of them emphasize the effects of ECs on the microbial composition and metabolic function of biofilms in the ecosystem.…”

“…The spread of antibiotic resistance is linked to the use of antibiotics. Qiu, et al 58 analyzed 31 water and sediment samples from rivers in China and observed positive correlations among blad gene, Fusobacteria and sulfamethoxazole. The authors suggested that antibiotic exposure may be positively linked to the expression of ARG in certain bacteria 58 .…”

“…In the surface water and sediments collected by Qiu et al (2019) from the Maozhou, Guanlan, Buji, Longgan, and Pingshan rivers of Shenzhen, China, 20 antibiotics were detected ranging from 37 to 1,076 ng/L in 31 water samples and from 28 to 2,729 ng/g in 31 sediment samples with sulfonamides occurring at higher concentrations. Maozhou River, the most complex water system in Shenzhen, which flows through different industrial areas, had samples with some of the highest concentrations of the detected antibiotics.…”
