Occurrence of Antibiotics, Antibiotic Resistance Genes and Viral Genomes in Wastewater Effluents and Their Treatment by a Pilot Scale Nanofiltration Unit

Abstract: Broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotics (ciprofloxacin and levofloxacin), carbapenem and fluoroquinolone resistance genes, as well as viral genomes, were detected in grab samples of wastewater effluents. Passive samplers, which are simpler and easier to use and provide information about the concentrations and combination of contaminants present in a certain fluid matrix over time, proved to be extremely promising devices to monitor the presence of the target antibiotics in wastewater effluents. Nanofiltrati… Show more

“…The obtained concentrate stream could in turn be treated by UV. Recently, Cristóvão et al tested the use of Desal 5DK membranes at a domestic wastewater treatment plant [80]. They observed stable permeance, with high rejections for target antibiotics, ARGs and viral genomes.…”

“…The lowest LRV of 1.18 was noticed for bla OXY in the manure of site 2 and in the digestate sample. Cristóvão, Tela, Silva, Oliveira, Bento-Silva, Bronze, Crespo, Crespo, Nunes, and Pereira [ 87 ] noticed only 90.59% removal of the bla NDM gene after NF with Desal 5 DK membrane. However, the removal rate of other bla ( bla KPC, bla OXA-48 and bla VIM) genes were reported above 99.6%.…”

“…NF was applied to pre-treated (filtered first with 1.2 µm filters and then with 0.45 µm polyamide membrane) domestic wastewater collected after the biological treatment and prior to the disinfection step and spiked with target antibiotics and viral genomes (Figure 2) [133]. Since high rejections were obtained, the authors consider NF a promising tertiary treatment option.…”
