OCCURRENCE OF A TWO GENERATION STRAIN OF THE EUROPEAN CORN BORER, OSTRINIA NUBILALIS (LEPIDOPTERA: PYRALIDAE), IN QUEBEC

Abstract: There are now two strains of the European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hübner), in Quebec. The strain normally found produces one generation while the more recently introduced strain produces two generations per year. Both strains have been characterized and compared with corn borer strains from Ontario and New York State. The two attributes of the recently introduced strain that promote the development of a second generation are (1) early emergence in the spring with less intense diapause and (2) a lower c… Show more

“…Z races predominate over most of the ECB range in Europe and North America, whereas the E race is found only at select locations in Switzerland, Italy, and eastern North America. (Klun and cooperators 1975, McLeod et al 1979, Buechi et al 1982, Anglade et al 1984.…”

“…3) and represents an important addition to the understanding of flight patterns occurring at the present time in this state. Shifts in voltinism are not uncommon, but frequently result from displacement of univoltine types by multiple generations (Wresselll953, McEwen et al 1968, McLeod et al 1979. In many regions of upstate New York either a shift from bivoltine to univoltine flights is occurring or the two types have coexisted for many decades.…”

“…Sweet corn is a major vegetable crop in Canada grown on over 20,000 hectares of land across all provinces. In the province of Quebec, Canada, two ECB races overlap and are differentiated by the use of two distinct pheromones: the Z ‐univoltine race, and the E ‐bivoltine race (McLeod et al, ; Hudon & LeRoux, ; Smith et al, ). This insect goes through five larval instars and a pupal stage before emerging into the adult stage.…”
