Occurrence, Biosynthesis, Biological activity and NMR Spectroscopy of D and B, D Ring Seco-limonoids of Meliaceae Family

Abstract: Limonoids are modified tetranortriterpenoids, classified on the basis of which of the four rings (A, B, C and D) in the intact triterpene nucleus have been oxidized. The order Rutales produces a variety of seco-limonoids, such as A, B, C, D, AB, AD, and BD-ring seco-limonoids. The Meliaceae family, belonging to the order Rutales, has yielded several D-ring and B, D-ring seco-limonoids This review describes the occurrence, biosynthesis, biological activity and NMR spectroscopy of D ring secolimonoids, such as g… Show more

“…Meliaceae trees are known as an excellent hardwood, prized for their wood quality, besides having considerable economic value, for example, cedar ( Cedrela ) and mahogany ( Swietenia spp., Khaya spp.) [ 4 , 5 ]. As a result, plants of this genus have experienced overexploitation, leading to three species being added to the Official National List of Flora Species Endangered by Decree No.…”

“…Overall, the following biological activities are described for the Meliaceae family, which are reported for the genus Cedrela [ 17 ]: antiviral, anthelmintic, anti-rheumatic, anti-cancer, and anti-inflammatory action, and antifeedant and insecticidal effects [ 4 , 14 ].…”

“…Khaya senegalensis extracts have been reported to exhibit anti-inflammatory effects [ 4 ] as well as anti-bacterial [ 5 ], antihelmintic [ 6 ], antitumor, antioxidant [ 7 ] and antiplasmodial activities [ 8 ]. The stem bark extract and the chemical constituent profile have been the subject of extensive phytochemical and pharmacological investigations since the 1960s [ 9 11 ]. Despite the extensive research on the stem bark extract of Khaya senegalensis , a dearth of information on the toxicological profile of this plant still exists.…”

“…Ethanol extract of X. granatum fruit from Hainan Island contained 3-deacetyl xyloccensin M ( 5 ) with a molecular formula of C 27 H 36 O 8 . Compound 5 has six rings, two esters, and carbon–carbon double bonds, and it has a similar structure to xyloccensin M. Another isolated compound, 3-deacetyl xyloccensin N ( 6 ) with a molecular formula, C 27 H 36 O 8 , has keto and ester carbonyl groups, hydroxyl, carbon double bond, one methoxycarbonyl group, and β -furyl moiety [ 87 ]. Compounds 5 and 6 are a pair of isomers of mexicanolides, and compound 6 is suspected as a biosynthetic intermediate of compound 5 [ 72 ].…”
