Human Respiratory Syncytial Virus (HRSV) is recognized as the single most important pathogen responsible for acute viral infection of the lower respiratory tract in young children. In this study, 84 samples from children under two years of age presenting acute respiratory symptoms were obtained from September 2000 to November 2001. Analysis by immunofluorescence and reverse-transcription followed by PCR, revealed that 18% (15/84) of all the samples were positive for HRSV, in which 80% (12/15) of the cases was observed in children under six months of age and the subgroups A and B co-circulated in the studied period. These are the first data obtained for Botucatu city and seasonality is evident by the higher circulation of the virus between May and July.

ResumoObjetivo: o presente artigo tem por objetivo apresentar uma revisão acerca das principais vacinas utilizadas na população pediá-trica, com impacto direto na prevenção dos processos infecciosos infantis do trato respiratório. Fontes dos dados:foram analisadas informações de artigos publicados em revistas científicas nacionais e internacionais, selecionados por busca direta ou por pesquisa nas bases de dados Lilacs e Medline.Síntese dos dados: o artigo foi estruturado em tópicos, apresentando questões relativas à imunização contra os patógenos freqüen-tes do trato respiratório em humanos, como Haemophilus influenza, vírus influenza, vírus respiratório sincicial e Streptococcus pneumoniae.Conclusões: a prevenção de doenças respiratórias, através de imunização, constitui-se numa das principais medidas para controle das infecções respiratórias. O acesso da população a estas novas vacinas, principalmente contra Haemophilus influenza, o que já ocorre há alguns anos com reconhecida eficácia, e agora contra o Streptococcus pneumoniae (vacina heptavalente) apontam para uma nova perspectiva, direcionada para o manejo da doença respiratória infantil. The data were selected by means of direct search or search in the Lilacs and Medline databases. Summary of the findings: this article was structured in topics, presenting issues related to immunization against frequent pathogens of the respiratory tract in human beings: Haemophilus influenza, influenza virus, respiratory syncytial virus and Streptococcus pneumoniae.Conclusions: the prevention of respiratory diseases through immunization is one of the main measures for the control of respiratory infection. These new vaccines, especially against Haemophilus influenza, have been available for some years with acknowledged efficacy. Now, the vaccine against Streptococcus pneumoniae (heptavalent vaccine) leads to a new perspective towards the management of respiratory diseases in children. Outbreaks of human respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV) are the leading cause of serious acute lower respiratory viral disease in many countries in different continents. Data on clinical and epidemiological aspects of HRSV infections in this country have been reported, but there is lack of data regarding the molecular epidemiology of this virus in Salvador. The genetic variability of HRSV isolated during an outbreak in Salvador, Brazil (1999) has been analysed. Partial sequences of the G protein gene of 13 isolates from antigenic group A and 4 isolates from antigenic group B of HRSV were determined. Nucleotide sequences of C-terminal G gene were compared to sequences of HRSV isolates from countries of South America and from the rest of the world available at the GenBank. Brazilian group A and B isolates were clustered into previously characterised genotypes: GA5, GA2, GA7, and GB3, SAB3, respectively. This is the first study of GA7 and SAB3 genotypes circulation in South American countries. It is interesting to point out that viruses isolated in Salvador appear to be closer related with those from Montevideo-Uruguay and Buenos Aires, Argentina strains, suggesting circulation of similar strains among different South American countries in different seasons. Moreover, viruses closely related genetically circulated in the same year in Salvador and distant places such as Mozambique, supporting the previous suggestion on the complexity of HRSV strain circulation patterns, and the high capability of HRSV spreading world-wide.
