Microplastics (MPs) are small, plastic particles of various shapes, sizes and polymers.Although well studied in marine systems, their roles and importance in freshwater environments remain uncertain. Nevertheless, the restricted ranges and variable traits of freshwater fishes result in their communities being important receptors and strong bioindicators of MP pollution. Here, the current knowledge on MPs in freshwater fishes is synthesized, along with the development of recommendations for future research and sample processing. MPs are commonly ingested and passively taken up by numerous freshwater fishes, with ingestion patterns often related to individual traits (e.g. body size, trophic level) and environmental factors (e.g. local urbanization, habitat features). Controlled MP exposure studies highlight various effects on fish physiology, biochemistry and behaviour that are often complex, unpredictable, species-specific and nonlinear in respect of dose-response relationships.Egestion is typically rapid and effective, although particles of a particular shape and/ or size may remain, or translocate across the intestinal wall to other organs via the blood. Regarding future studies, there is a need to understand the interactions of MP pollution with other anthropogenic stressors (e.g. warming, eutrophication), with a concomitant requirement to increase the complexity of studies to enable impact assessment at population, community and ecosystem levels, and to determine whether there are consequences for processes, such as parasite transmission, where MPs could vector parasites or increase infection susceptibility. This knowledge will determine the extent to which MP pollution can be considered a major anthropogenic stressor of freshwaters in this era of global environmental change.

Microplastics pollution in Vietnam has been received more attention in recent years due to its adverse impacts on the environment. The coastal areas, especially estuary is potential accumulation zone of microplastics. These locations, where inland waters meet the ocean, are heavily impacted by anthropogenic activities and the dynamic of the sea currents. This study aims to investigate the spatial distribution, physical characteristics, and chemical composition of microplastics in beach sand in Can Gio, Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam. A total of 90 sand samples from five sampling sites were collected in November 2019, they were analyzed for size, shape, color, and identity. The results showed that microplastics concentration ranged from 0 to 6.58 pieces/ kg d.w. Microplastics tend to be distributed along the upper-shore line and in the surface layer of sand. The data revealed that microplastics ranging from 2.8–5 mm were the most abundant (72.46%), pellet shape accounted for the highest proportion (41.31%), white and blue are two popular colours up to 80% in total of detected microplastics. Chemical composition of the microplastics was determined by attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared (FTIR-ATR) spectroscopy, polypropylene and polystyrene are the two most common plastic types in this study. Macroplastics found in beach sand samples were also assessed, the study shows a positive correlation between microplastic and macroplastic, showing the possible origin of microplastics. The findings of this study provided more insights into the microplastic pollution status in beach sand and the foundation for future investigation.

The massive scope of plastic and microplastic pollution in soils and sediments requires broad and thorough studies to understand details of the extent and effects of these persistent pollutants. Plastic particulate pollutants in the environment are subjected to natural processes, fragment over time into smaller pieces, and influence the surrounding biota. Land environments, from open fields to agricultural fields to watersheds and deep ocean sediment, have been subjected to plastics/microplastics from a variety of sources and via natural and anthropogenic transport for many years. A number of different sampling, processing, and detection methods have been used to identify and quantify the loads of microplastics in soils and sediments. Scientific studies are still lacking systematic, standardized protocols, which will allow for accurate comparisons and compilations of data from around the world.
