Occurrence and Behavior of Macrolide Antibiotics in Municipal Wastewater Treatment: Possible Importance of Metabolites, Synthesis Byproducts, and Transformation Products

Abstract: A one-year study on the occurrence and fate of macrolide antibiotics and their metabolites, synthesis by-products and transformation products (TPs) was performed in the wastewater treatment plant of the city of Zagreb (Croatia). The target compounds were found in all analyzed influent and effluent samples, with the total concentrations of azithromycin-, clarithromycin-and erythromycin-related compounds reaching up to 25, 12 and 0.25 μg/L, respectively. The most prominent individual constituents were the parent… Show more

“…Recently, many hospitals and research facilities have been required to reduce the application of these medicines for several reasons. First, according to numerous studies, researchers confirmed these drugs have heavily leached into the environment in the past 20 years [74]. Secondly, the effluent from hospital wastewater has been regarded as the primary source for the spread of antiviral-and antibacterial-resistance genes [75].…”

“…Antibiotics from municipal sources require understanding of how antibiotics behave in wastewater treatment plants. A year‐long study performed by Senta, Kostanjevecki, Krizman‐Matasic, Terzic, and Ahel (2019) investigated the occurrence, behavior, and fate of macrolide antibiotics in a WWTP in Zagreb, Croatia. Particular emphasis was placed on detecting metabolites, synthesis by‐products, and transformation products of the target parent compounds.…”

“…These six compounds were consisted of three new generation macrolides and three metabolites formed by deglycolysation. According to the study, they all have more or less toxicity to human's body [9]. The most frequent toxicity events of Telimycin were diarrhea and nausea including dizziness and vomit [10].…”

“…However, the peak width of neo spiramycin I became broader with the addition of ammonium acetate, and there were also two chromatographic peaks existed in oleandomycin. Therefore, in this experiment, a series of pH (3,4,5,6,7,8,9, and 10) gradients were selected to optimize the peak shapes of neo spiramycin I and oleandomycin. The results showed that the peak shape and peak resolution of each target were relatively good at pH ≤ 3 and pH ≥ 9.…”
