Occurrence and Abundance of Dermacentor reticulatus in the Habitats of the Ecological Corridor of the Wieprz River, Eastern Poland

Abstract: Ecological corridors are zones of natural vegetation, which connect with other vegetation strips to create migration routes for animals and plants. The aim of our study was to investigate the occurrence and relative abundance of Dermacentor reticulatus in various habitats of the ecological corridor of the Wieprz River in eastern Poland. Ticks were collected using the flagging method in seven sites within the ecological corridor of the Wieprz River, i.e., one of the longest uninterrupted vegetation strips in ea… Show more

“…The composition and distribution of vegetation patches are important to migration of animals. Natural vegetation is usually considered as ecological corridor, which connects with other vegetation strips to create migration routes and provide shelter for animals [30]. Scott et al (2010) showed that the activity and feeding behavior of pipistrelle bats were closely correlated with the quality of riparian buffer zones [31].…”

“…The Maotiao River, forming the Maotiao River Basin (105°59′-106°22′ E, 26°09′-26°56′ N), is the first-level tributary on the right bank of the middle reaches of the Wujiang River, flowing from south to north through the Pingba District of Anshun City, Qingzhen City of Guiyang City, Guanshan Lake District, Baiyun District, and Xiuwen County, and merging into the Wujiang River in Xiuwen County [29]. The river basin is located in the central part of Guizhou Province, and covers an area of about 3250 km 2 . The main stream is 179 km long, and drops for 549 m within the basin, with an average slope of 3%.…”

“…The two adjacent indicators are compared with each other to determine the degree of importance and marked as t i ; finally, the judgment matrix R is obtained, as shown in Equation (1). With this construction, the matrix always satisfies the consistency test; thus, the subjective weight of the index can be directly calculated without the test, as shown in Equation (2).…”

“…They are an attractive habitat for D. reticulatus, but also represent migration routes for wild animals and their pathogens. Ecological corridors are important both on a national scale, allowing ticks to spread along with their hosts, and on a smaller scale, enabling the colonization of parks and green areas within cities (Supergan et al 2008;Zając et al 2021). Numerous observations suggest that the ornate dog tick and common tick are characterized by a certain plasticity and the ability to occupy environments changed by human activity.…”
