Background: The inappropriate usage of terms and concepts and/or unclear definitions provided in the scientific literature hinder progress in any scientific field. This risk is especially noticeable in applied fields of research such as sports science and physical education. Objective: This study explored existing literature that uses the term ‘motor performance skills’ and aimed to propose a comprehensive definition to be applied in future research. Method: Following an adapted scoping approach grounded in the rapid review model, we searched electronic databases Pub-Med/Medline, Web of Science, and Scopus until February 2022. The primary demographic focus was sports science and physical education disciplines. After screening of titles and abstracts, 184 papers were identified for a full review. Twenty-two papers met the inclusion criteria from the full review and received qualitative content analysis. The qualitative content analysis focused on the elaborated qualities of the term ‘motor performance skill’. Coding was used to identify and extract content, identify patterns, and observe the depth of interpretation of the term. Results: Only six papers used descriptive language, and three used explanatory language to convey aspects of the term’s meaning. All included papers extrapolated or provided examples to demonstrate the term’s meaning. Based on a collaborative process, the study reached a proposed definition that has the potential to be coined for the term ‘motor performance skills’ and used in future research. Conclusion: Thus, the current analysis revealed the need to collaboratively address the conceptual ambiguity and develop a comprehensive definition of ‘motor performance skills’

Background: Telehealth can assist with providing accessible pediatric occupational therapy services. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the acceptability, inter-rater reliability, and concurrent validity of the Gilboa Functional Test (GIFT) as a video-conference-based graphomotor examination for children (GIFT-Online). Methodology: A community-based sample of 157 children aged 3 to 7 years was screened using the GIFT-Online. Findings: Inter-rater reliability was excellent ( r = 0.97; p < .001; n = 40). In addition, significant correlations were found between the total GIFT-Online scores and the Developmental Coordination Disorder Questionnaire 2007 (DCDQ’07), the Little DCDQ (LDCDQ) ( r = 0.29, p < .001; n = 157), and the Drawing Proficiency Screening Questionnaire (DPSQ) ( r = −0.35, p < .001; n = 157); demonstrating construct and concurrent validity. The online assessment was well received by parents and children. Conclusions: The GIFT-Online was found to be an acceptable method of assessing graphomotor performance. Our results support the validity and reliability of the GIFT-Online as a screening tool administered remotely, thereby overcoming physical distancing and travel restrictions.

Wandering, or random movement, affects cognitive and social skills. However, we lack methods to objectively measure wandering behavior. The purpose of this pilot study was to explore the use of the Ubisense real-time location system (RTLS) in an early childhood setting to explore wandering in typically developing (TD) children ( n = 2) and children with or at risk for developmental disabilities (WA-DD; n = 3). We used the Ubisense RTLS, a tool for capturing locations of individuals in indoor environments, and Fractal Dimension (FD) to measure the degree of wandering or the straightness of a path. Results of this descriptive, observational study indicated the Ubisense RTLS collected 46,229 1-s location estimates across the five children, and TD children had lower FD ( M = 1.36) than children WA-DD ( M = 1.42). Children WA-DD have more nonlinear paths than TD children. Implications for measuring wandering are discussed.
