Occupational Therapy Benchmarks Within Orthopedic (Hip) Critical Pathways

Abstract: Although these eight orthopedic (hip) critical pathways included occupational therapy benchmarks, further development and definition of the role of occupational therapy within subsequent orthopedic (hip) critical pathways is needed.

“…Occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants can work within a multidisciplinary framework to design facility-specific best-care practice guidelines based on approaches supported by evidence. Although the therapist's clinical judgment cannot be replaced by a checklist, research has shown that uniform processes can reduce a trial-and-error approach to care, improving efficiency and positive outcomes (Novalis, Messenger, & Morris, 2000).…”

“…Treatment in occupational therapy, while it may include a biomechanical-rehabilitative approach, is enhanced by emphasis on occupation and functional adaptation (Jackson & Schkade, 2001). There is minimal opportunity for client-centered intervention and clinical benchmarks emphasize self-care, functional transfers, and assistive device prescription and practice during length of stay (Novalis, Messenger, & Morris, 2000).…”

“…While it has been used in education to help to establish comparability between teaching centres and in the setting standards and guidelines [1], there are few examples of use in clinical practice. One study has used benchmarking as a means of comparing patient performance benchmarks in orthopaedic critical pathways (Novalis et al, 2000). This study identified eight orthopaedic (hip) care pathways, of these the activities of daily living was the benchmark most frequently used within the sample, followed by functional benchmarks.…”
