Occupational skin disease in Victoria, Australia

Abstract: We confirm the importance of occupational contact dermatitis as the most common cause of OSD, with ICD being the most common diagnosis. There are differences in the causes of ICD between our group of male and female workers. For the first time in Australia, rates of OSD in certain industries have been calculated.

“…An Australian study on OSD also provides incidence rates of occupational groups, 10 but we had difficulties in comparing these with our own results. “Hair and beauty” had an incidence of 7.0, whereas our “hairdressers” and “beauticians” had 16.3 and 12.9 cases/10 000 workers per year, respectively.…”

“…This finding was surprising given the cognitive component of this test, requiring knowledge of occupational exposures and manufacturing, skin disease and pattern recognition, determination of relevance, evaluation of new literature, and often multiple concomitant diagnoses. 12 However, APPs may be billing solely for the test application, with a dermatologist interpreting the results on a separate day. The data set does not link patch application to the follow-up visit, so we cannot determine who did the interpreting.…”

“…4 OSDs are also found in 75% of patients in Victoria, and 45% were diagnosed as WRSDs. 5 The annual incidence of WRSDs is reported to be between 5.7 and 101 cases per 100,000 workers. 6 As per another study in Norway, about 5 million people and 2.65 million employees had a skin disease in 2014.…”
