BackgroundWomen in the fisher communities in coastal regions of Bangladesh are engaged in a wide range of fishery activities including fish sorting, grading, cutting, dry fish processing, transporting and selling. However, there is limited evidence available on the occupational hazards and risks experienced by them.MethodThe study was conducted among fishing colonies in Cox’s Bazar and Chattogram districts in Bangladesh. This was a cross-sectional study comprised of both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Data were primarily collected through eight focus group discussions (FGD) and a quantitative survey of a sample of 207 women working in fisheries sector.FindingsThe study found a high occurrence of occupational hazards, health risks and disease conditions and limited availability of preventive measures among the women in the fisher communities in the coastal Bangladesh. Occupational hazards include physical safety hazards, like slippery surface, fish cutting instruments, fish sting or bite and contact with fishes; physical hazards, like prolonged sun exposure and noise; chemical hazards like pesticides, salt and salt water; ergonomic hazards, like prolonged sitting or standing in uncomfortable posture and heavy weight lifting; and biological hazards, like inadequate provision of sanitary latrine or hand washing soap at workplace. The study also found occupational risks resulting from the hazards including injuries (87.44%), musculoskeletal conditions (69.08%), skin diseases/conditions (56.52%), eye complaints (33.82%), severe respiratory distress (24.15%) and high incidence of self-reported communicable diseases. Majority of the women did not use personal protection equipment at their workplace (78.26%) and have a first aid kit at their workplace (93.72%).ConclusionThis study highlights the critical occupational health and safety challenges faced by the women in the fisheries sector. A comprehensive multisectoral strategy needs to be undertaken to mitigate the occupational hazards and prevent associated diseases among the women in fisher communities promoting their health and wellbeing.

The study assessed the perception of poultry farmers on the performance of extension agents on service delivery in western agricultural zone of Bauchi State, Nigeria. Four out of seven local governments areas with high concentration of poultry farmers were purposively selected. The data were collected from 120 poultry farmers using structured questionnaire. The data obtained were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The results of the study showed that 78.3% of the respondents were married with 72.5% female and having mean age of 35.5. Majority (70%) have farm size below 200 birds, 82.5% of respondents had one form of formal education or the other. About 47% of the respondents had between 6-10years farming experience with 65% of them operating poultry farming as secondary occupation. The study established that the extension agents were perceived by the farmers having adequate knowledge of subject matters (mean = 4.26), good communication skills (mean = 4.45). The result of regression analysis showed that all the predictors yielded significant beta weights with their varied t-values which were all statistically significant (P<0.05) except education level. Age and sex of the respondents had negative but significant effect (P<0.01) on the perceived effectiveness. Based on this study, it was concluded that the extension service delivery in the zone was effective. The recommendation made was that more extension staff should be employed and deployed to poultry production areas.

Heavy metals bioaccumulation in fish constitute an issue of public health concerns. This study aimed to evaluate the levels of Cadmium (Cd) and Lead (Pb) in the head and muscle tissues of imported frozen fish as well as health risk to man. A total of 30 frozen fish were sampled from different fish markets in Damaturu and Maiduguri in Yobe and Borno States, Nigeria respectively. Heavy metal concentrations were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The highest mean concentration levels (0.60 ± 0.32 mg/kg and 0.06 ± 0.10 mg/kg) of Pb and Cd were found in the head and the lowest (0.09 ± 0.02 and 0.01 ± 0.00) in the muscle tissues respectively. The mean concentration levels of Pb (0.60 ± 0.32 mg/kg) and Cd (0.06 ± 0.10 mg/kg) in fish markets A and D exceed the maximum allowable limits of 0.50 mg/kg and 0.05 mg/kg respectively. Fish markets had statistically significant (p< 0.05) effect on the concentration levels of Pb among the sampled fish. The assessment of potential health risk; estimated daily intake, the target cancer rate, target hazard quotient and hazard index values obtained were below the threshold, indicating consumption of head and muscle of imported frozen fish sold in the study areas is safe and hazardless. However, because of their non-degradable nature and tendency to accumulate in tissues and organs, we recommended that heavy metals contamination in imported frozen fish should be monitored regularly, and packages should contain concentration labels before releasing it into the market value chain.
