Occupational exposure to magnetic fields in relation to mortality from brain cancer among electricity generation and transmission workers.

Abstract: Objective-To investigate whether the risks of mortality from brain cancer are related to occupational exposure to magnetic fields. Methods-A total of 112 cases of primary brain cancer were identified from a cohort of 84 018 male and female employees of the (then) Central Electricity Generating Board and its privatised successor companies. Individual cumulative occupational exposures to magnetic fields were estimated by linking available computerised job history data with magnetic field measurements collected … Show more

“…Researchers have come to the conclusion that ELF magnetic fields can increase the risks of such illnesses as leukemia [5], brain cancer [6], amyotrophic lateral sclerosis [7] and Alzheimer's disease [8]. Furthermore, exposure to ELF magnetic field can have a negative influence on pregnant women, human fetus and small children [9], [10].…”

“…A number of studies have developed quantitative exposure matrices using this approach (72)(73)(74). The strategy starts with the selection of reasonably homogeneous job groups for assignment, sampling workers in those groups for direct measurement of workplace EMF exposure, using statistical approaches to assign exposure to the job group, and finally applying that information to all individuals in the study.…”

“…The exposure assessment in these early studies, however, has been criticized since it relied on job titles [7]. Several later industry-based studies performed on electric utility workers, which assessed individual exposures, have shown mixed results [8][9][10][11][12]. Few of the previous studies have presented results for histologic subtypes of brain cancer and, in relation to glioma, few have specifically examined the risk according to grade [13].…”
