Occupational asbestos exposure among respiratory cancer patients in Lithuania

Abstract: Findings indicate that a fraction (3.4%) of the lung cancer cases could be attributed to heavy occupational exposure to asbestos using the Helsinki criterion of > or =25 fiber years. Therefore, approximately 50 lung cancer cases per year in Lithuania could be asbestos-related compensable occupational diseases.

“…However, this extrapolated approximation does not necessarily correlate to the actually accumulated fiber burden in the lungs [12][13][14][15]. Therefore the proposal for a "carefully obtained history of occupational exposure to asbestos" alone might as well lead to an underestimation of asbestos related diseases, as shown by our scientific data and other authors [2,16]. We therefore stand by our conclusion, that for compensation claims, all diagnostic tools should be utilized before an occupational disease under section 4104 is rejected.…”

“…Although abestos was also commonly reported in Lithuania, no asbestos-related cancer cases were reported. However, about 50 lung cancer cases diagnosed in Lithuania annually could also include cases of occupational diseases related to asbestos [25]. The elevated case rate among males compared with females reflects gender differences in occupational patterns.…”

“…Asbestos fibers, including chrysotile/white asbestos have a very long half-life in the human lungs. There is plenty of literature about asbestos-exposed workers supporting this statement [7][8][9][10][11][12][13]. All authors do find all types of asbestos in the human lungs long time after exposure cessation.…”
