Occupational and non‐occupational allergic contact dermatitis from beryllium

Abstract: There are various references to sensitization to beryllium in the literature. Since introducing a patch testing series for patients with suspected sensitization to metals, we have found 3 cases of sensitization to beryllium. Of these 3 cases, we regard the first 2 as having relevant sensitization. Beryllium chloride (1% pet.) was positive in 3 patients and negative in 150 controls.

“…Dental alloys are subjected to a wide variety of corrosive media, often acidic, and this combined with concomitant abrasion increases the probability of breakdown of protective, oxide, surface films and the likelihood of formation of soluble beryllium and nickel ions. Contact dermatitis from Ni-Cr-Be dental alloys has been reported (22) and (23) and, in the latter case, specifically ascribed to beryllium.…”

“…77 Chronic gingivitis has been reported adjacent to beryllium-containing dental crowns and bridges suggesting that this response may be apparent with beryllium metal and salts. 108,109 Chronic, nonhealing ulcers are reported with implantation of beryllium into an abrasion or other cut in the skin 77 and excision is required for resolution. 110 Nodular granulomatous skin lesions with appearance similar to warts may develop with and without known penetration of beryllium into the skin, and have been treated with excision 79 or use of steroids.…”
