Occupation exposures and sperm morphology: a case-referent analysis of a multi-centre study

Abstract: While this study did not identify any occupational exposure uniquely related to sperm morphology, the capacity of the study to detect risk was increased by including morphology with sperm concentration and motility.

“…Pacey et al [ 77 ] indicated that modifiable lifestyle factors such as obesity, smoking or alcohol intake/consumption have little effect on the percentage of sperm morphology. Similarly, Cherry et al [ 78 ] examined the occupational exposures of 2,011 men attending infertility clinics across the UK and failed to find any significant relation with sperm morphology. Several other studies reported a significant negative impact of alcohol and smoking on various semen parameters including sperm morphology [ 79 80 81 ].…”

“…No systematic reviews or meta-analyses have been performed, which is probably because of the significant variation in study design. The available studies use different ages of participants, different outcomes, subjective definitions of heat exposure, and even different criteria for semen analysis ( Zorgniotti & Seaflon, 1988 and Cherry et al , 2014 ).…”

“…As such, for most men, healthcare professionals can only focus on delivering general advice to highlight the known lifestyle risks for poor sperm quality. For example, epidemiological studies have shown how certain occupations [5,6], the wearing of tight underwear [7,8], tobacco smoking [9], high body mass index (BMI) [10] and recreational drug use [11] are each associated with aspects of poor sperm quality.…”
