Occult breast carcinoma presenting with axillary lymph node metastases: follow-up of eleven patients

Abstract: GCDFP-15 is useful for confirming the primary site of breast carcinoma. Ultrasonography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging are thought to be good for detecting occult primary tumors. The incidence of OBC is still unclear, but it is possible that these patients need to be treated as typical stage II patients.

“…They show reactivity for gross cystic disease fluid protein‐15, estrogen receptors, progesterone receptors and CK7. The tumor cells usually lack reactivity for CK20 145 . Metastatic deposits from lobular carcinoma of the breast consist of monomorphic population of loosely cohesive malignant cells with regular nuclei, evenly distributed chromatin and inconspicuous nucleoli.…”

The tumor cells are positive for estrogen receptors, progesterone receptors, high molecular weight cytokeratin (34 beta E12 perinuclear) and epithelial membrane antigens.…”

“…A new breast primary may be found. Historically, when mastectomy and careful pathologic sectioning have been performed, a new breast primary has been located in 33–75% of cases (6–8). This report will present data on patients where no breast primary was found on the side with the axillary metastasis in order to highlight the complexity of this clinical scenario.…”
