Occlusion of an Aberrant Artery to a Pulmonary Sequestration Using a Duct Occluder

Abstract: This report describes a female infant with a rare chromosome defect, del. 12 (q22-24.1), who has severe pulmonary valve stenosis, an atrial septal defect, and a small muscular ventricular septal defect. At 4 months of age a balloon pulmonary valvuloplasty was performed in the cardiac catheterization laboratory. During the procedure, a large aberrant artery from the aorta to a sequestration of the right lower lobe of lung was found. The flow-off from the sequestration was into a dilated left atrium. The single … Show more

“…Not surprisingly, off-label use of these devices has been reported as the solution to a variety of relatively unusual anatomic problems [4][5][6][7][8][9]. The off-label use of Amplatzer Septal or Ductal Occluders, or an Amplatzer Vascular Plug proved effective in our cohort of patients with accessory ventriculopulmonary connections following either single ventricle palliation or biventricular repair.…”

“…Though EPS can occur in the chest cavity, diaphragm, Patients with EPS may present hypoxia, feeding difficulties, respiratory symptoms, and cardiac failure without a cardiac cause in infancy (8)(9)(10). The investigations for EPS include chest X-ray, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, and CT (11)(12)(13).…”

“…The PDA occluder is easy to deploy, has good maneuverability and can be retrieved before deployment. Besides its utility in closing patent ductus arteriosus, the PDA occluder had been used successfully for closure of paravalvular leaks [11], the left ventricle to descending aorta conduit [12], aberrant arteries [13], the aortico left ventricle tunnel [14], aortocaval fistula [15], major aortopulmonary collaterals, the aortopulmonary window, ruptured sinus of the valsalva aneurysm, ventricular septal defects, pseudo aneurysm of the main pulmonary artery, persistent left superior vena cava, coronary artery fistula and the subclavian artery to innominate vein fistula. The PDA duct occluder is an effective alternative for vascular plugs, for closure of internal iliac arteriovenous malformation.…”
