Occlusal Concepts and Considerations in Fixed Prosthodontics

Abstract: The UK has an increasingly ageing population, many of whom are retaining more of their own teeth. This has led to an increase in the prevalence of tooth wear and the need to replace pre-existing failing restorations. In many cases this will be achieved by fixed prosthodontics. This paper provides a brief overview of important occlusal concepts that should be considered when providing non-implant fixed prosthodontics using either a conformative or reorganised approach. The aim is to give general dental practiti… Show more

“…Given the above data, it is possible to see that the semi-adjustable articulator combined with the clinical examination is an important tool for occlusal analysis, diagnosis, and treatment plan, being able to reproduce protrusion and lateral movements similar to those performed by the patient, which allows performing prosthetic work under biological and functional principles (Amin et al, 2019;Buduru et al, 2020).…”

“…In addition, a detailed occlusal analysis is important as it shows all tooth contacts and anterior guidance that should be maintained when preparing the teeth. It also allows clinicians to decide whether to maintain the existing occlusal scheme (conformative approach) or to modify the existing occlusal scheme (reorganized approach) [79].…”

“…It is a well-known fact that the basis for the formation of physiological occlusion is equal distribution of functional loads in cases of sufficient number of correctly placed occlusal contacts and adequate placement of TMJ components [10][11][12]. Modern methods of functional assessment of the condition of the masticatory muscles and occlusal relationships allow reaching the most adequate balance of the thyroid gland objectively in real time [13][14][15][16].…”
