Occipitoatlantal decompression and noninvasive vagus nerve stimulation slow conduction velocity through the atrioventricular node in healthy participants

Abstract: Context Management of atrial fibrillation includes either rhythm control that aims at establishing a sinus rhythm or rate control that aims at lowering the ventricular rate, usually with atrioventricular nodal blocking agents. Another potential strategy for ventricular rate control is to induce a negative dromotropic effect by augmenting cardiac vagal activity, which might be possible through noninvasive and nonpharmacologic techniques. Thus, the hypothesis of this study was that occipitoatla… Show more

“…In addition, we have only studied the short-term effects of taVNS on migraineurs in the present study. However, some studies have also considered the long-time effect of taVNS 126 , 127 . For future research, it should be considered to investigate the long-term effects of taVNS in migraineurs.…”

“…It is possible that the autonomic effects of taVNS only become apparent with repeated chronic applications. For example, in previous studies we applied taVNS on three consecutive days (Dalgleish et al, 2021 ; Kania et al, 2021 ). As in the current study, no significant effects of taVNS on heart rate variability were observed on the first study day of these prior studies.…”

“…This motion resulted in supination of the hands and separation of the fingers, creating an anterolateral force vector to either side of the foramen magnum (DeStefano, 2011 ). The gentle anterior and cephalad traction was then maintained for 5 min in the previously published study (Dalgleish et al., 2021 ; Kania et al., 2021 ) or for 10 min in the ongoing unpublished study.…”
