Occipital Artery Pseudoaneurysm: A Rare Scalp Swelling

Abstract: Traumatic pseudoaneurysm occurring in face and temple is commonly reported to occur in superficial temporal artery, and so far only four cases have reported involvement of the occipital artery. We report a case of 25-year-old male patient presented to us with a pulsatile swelling in the occipital region following a trauma at the same site 5 years ago. A CT angiogram revealed the pseudoaneurysm of the left occipital artery and was surgically excised after ligation of proximal and distal parts along the course o… Show more

“…Of three patients followed-up, there were no changes after 2 years in one patient, and spontaneous cure was achieved after 1 year in one patient. [8][9][10][11][12][13] Of these, an AVF was present in one patient. 11) The present case is the second report of an occipital aneurysm of a dAVF-feeding artery.…”

“…To treat aneurysms below the scalp, aneurysmectomy or endovascular treatment is selected. [6][7][8][10][11][12][13] The two procedures are highly safe as treatments for aneurysms below the scalp alone. 6) In the present case, the dAVF is asymptomatic, but the treatment of the subcutaneous aneurysm may be considered, as there is a risk of traumatic hemorrhage.…”

“…4 Previously eleven cases of traumatic occipital artery aneurysm has been reported. 1,5 Although the true incidence of traumatic pseudoaneurysms of the occipital artery is unknown, it is obvious that they are rare. In this article, we report twelfth case of the world.…”

“…1 Pseudoaneurysms of the head and neck are almost always associated with significant antecedent trauma, usually blunt, with the mass most commonly developing within 2 to 4 months after injury. [4][5][6] Less commonly, they have been reported after penetrating trauma, after injection, after surgery, and in the setting of postinfectious or inflammatory conditions. 1,7 Spontaneous formation of PAs of the superficial temporal artery has been reported, but it is thought to be extremely rare.…”
