Obturator externus bursa: prevalence of communication with the hip joint and associated intra-articular findings in 200 consecutive hip MR arthrograms

Abstract: The purpose of the study was to demonstrate the prevalence of communication between the hip joint and the obturator externus bursa on hip MR arthrography. Following institutional review board approval, 200 hip MR arthrograms in 196 subjects were independently reviewed by two musculoskeletal radiologists. Discrepancies were resolved by adjudication. The presence or absence of communication between the hip joint and the obturator externus bursa was recorded. Associated lesions involving the acetabular labrum and… Show more

“…There is evidence of extensive osteoarthritic changes in all these 6 specimens and no arthritic changes noted in the rest of the specimens suggesting that the bursa is present in diseased hips rather than normal hips. This corresponds to the findings reported by Kassarjian et al (4). In their study they looked into 200 consecutive hip MR arthrograms and noted 11 cases of OE bursa.…”

“…We believe it has different functions dependent upon the position of the hip joint. Recently several reports were published regarding the obturator externus bursa and impingement syndrome after total hip replacement, which is of interest with regard to the OE anatomical relation with the hip joint/acetabulum (2-3-4). The purpose of the study is to describe the OE morphology and its anatomic relationship to the acetabulum.…”

“…Prior studies have investigated the human bursa [11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19], but the anatomical information of anserine bursa was limited. In this reason, The aim of this study was to identify the boundary of the anserine bursa to determine the recommended injection site and the shape of the insertion area of PA.…”
