Potato (Solanum tuberosum) is a valuable cultivated vegetable with high nutritional qualities containing a variety of essential ingredients such as starch, vitamins and essential minerals. However cultivating potatoes is significantly complicated by diseases caused by a number of phytopathogens of both bacterial and fungal nature. Phytophthora infestans, Alternaria sp., Phoma exigua, Rhizoctonia solani, Fusarium sp., Verticillium sp., Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. sepedonicus, Pectobacterium sp., Dickeya sp. are considered amongst the most dangerous phytopathogens. This paper reviews the latest biotechnological approaches to the creation of potato plants resistant to a wide range of pathogens. In particular, the possibilities of applying genetic engineering methods to obtain potato plants resistant to pathogens, such as Solanum venture, S. mochiquence, S. demissum, S. bulbocastanum; avirulence genes; genes of antimicrobial peptides of plant, bacterial and animal origin by transferring the genes of resistance (R-genes) isolated from systematically related species into their genome. The review states that marker-assisted selection is suitable for obtaining varieties of S. tuberosum resistant to bacterial and fungal phytopathogens, where the R-genes or QTL regions can act as markers. Prospects for the use of genome editing technology using CRISPR/Cas9 or TALEN systems as one of the newest approaches to creating phytopathogen-resistant S. tuberosum plants have been considered. Achievements and successes in this way using these methods are analyzed in a detailed way in this review.

Aim. Obtaining of tobacco lines (Nicotiana tabacum L.) stably transformed with human lactoferrin gene (hLf), analysis of transgenic lines. Methods. Agrobacterium-mediated transformation of tobacco was carried out with the use of pBin35LF plasmid containing human lactoferrin gene under control of 35S promoter of cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV 35S) and selective npt II gene encoding neomicyne phosphotransferase II providing the resistance to kanamycin. The selection of transgenic lines was carried out for 3 months on MS medium supplemented with 100 mg/l of kanamycin. Integration of lactoferrin gene was confirmed with the use of PCR with primers specific to hLf gene. The investigation of karyotype of transgenic lines was carried out after the staining of the root cells with 1 % solution of acetoorseine. Results. After selection, 2 transgenic tobacco lines with confirmed integration of hLf gene were obtained. The transformation efficiency was 6.4 %. The chromosome number in transgenic and control lines was 2n=48. Conclusions. The obtained transgenic tobacco lines have the similar morphology and karyotype to control lines, so they could be considered to use as plant systems for the expression of recombinant human lactoferrin. “…Lactoferrin is a well-studied mammalian iron-binding protein with strong antimicrobial and immunomodulatory activity and low allergenicity. Due to the diverse beneficial properties of this protein, the expression and production of recombinant lactoferrin in the genomes of agricultural plants can be useful for various pharmaceutical applications, biological enrichment of products (Adleranova et al 2008 ; Lakshman et al 2013 ; Stefanova et al 2008 ; Tanasienko et al 2011 ; Yemets et al 2014 ), as well as for protection of plants from various pathogens (Buziashvili et al 2020a , 2020b ; Chahardoli et al 2018 ; Fukuta et al 2012 ; Han et al 2012 ; Lee et al 2002 ; Malnoy et al 2003 ; Mitra and Zhang 1994 ; Nguyen et al 2011 ; Stefanova et al 2013a , b ; Takase et al 2005 ; Zhang et al 1998 ). Agricultural crops are susceptible to many diseases caused by various pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and fungi. This paper reviews the general principles of plant protection against pathogens, as well as the role of iron and antimicrobial peptide metabolism in plant immunity. The article highlights the principles of antibacterial, fungicidal and antiviral action of lactoferrin, a mammalian secretory glycoprotein, and lactoferrin peptides, and their role in protecting plants from phytopathogens. This review offers a comprehensive analysis and shows potential prospects of using the lactoferrin gene to enhance plant resistance to various phytopathogens, as well as the advantages of this biotechnological approach over existing methods of protecting plants against various diseases.
