Obtaining Glycyrrhizic Acid and Its Practically Useful Salts from a Commercial Licorice Root Extract

Abstract: We describe an optimized method for obtaining glycyrrhizic acid (GA, 90.5 ± 1.5 %), which is the main triterpene glycoside of licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra L., Gl. uralensis Fisher) extract, and its trisodium and monoammonium salts from a commercial licorice root extract containing 20.0 ± 1.5% GA.

As an active principal in these plants, GA exhibits anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcerous, antidotal, antiallergic, anticancer and immuno-modulating activities (Kondratenko et al 2005). GA, being capable of inhibiting HIV, is regularly involved in the treatment of HIV patients.…”

“…Its mono-ammonium salt (glycyrram) is used as a sweetener (300 times sweeter than sugar) and is a taste-improving nutrient additive in the food industry. It is an antiviral agent, valuable anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic drug, capable of replacing prednisolone in the treatment of bronchial asthma, especially in children (Kondratenko et al 2005).…”
