Obtaining desired surface roughness of castings produced using ZCast direct metal casting process through Taguchi's experimental approach

Abstract: PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to investigate experimentally the effect of volume of casting, pouring temperature of different materials and shell mould wall thickness on the surface roughness of the castings obtained by using ZCast direct metal casting process.Design/methodology/approachTaguchi's design of experiment approach was used for this investigation. An L9 orthogonal array (OA) of Taguchi design which involves nine experiments for three factors with three levels was used. Analysis of variance (AN… Show more

“…Existing research on the use of Binder Jetting for metal casting has been primarily focused on case studies and determining properties of resultant materials. [39][40][41][42][43] The technology has been shown to be effective in obtaining cast prototypes with dimensional tolerances that are consistent with metal casting processes. [44] AM technologies have been used in foundry practice to produce patterns and core boxes for sand casting.…”

“…The surface impacts not only the wear of the mating parts but also the thermal processes during operation. Additionally, in the case of the production of molded elements in casting or injection processes, the surface topography of the molding cavity has a significant impact on the surface condition of the product [ 57 , 58 ]. During the process of surface topography inspection, optical and stylus measurement methods are used [ 59 , 60 , 61 ].…”

“…After analysing the current state of art it can be noted that the adaptation of additive technology for the construction of foundry patterns was described in the following papers [15][16][17]. However, these works do not describe in a comprehensive way the influence of technological parameters on the dimensional and shape accuracy, mechanical and tribological properties…”

“…There were also researches related to application of other additive technologies to build foundry patterns. In paper [16] authors used ZCast technology to build foundry patterns. They analysed the impact of technological parameters on the geometrical structure of the surface.…”
