It has become commonplace in modern society to collect and process large bodies of data in order to establish trends in the data and thereby identify business opportunities, areas of cost-saving, etc. This article questions whether, in the healthcare context, the data sets from biomarker-type tests are reliable indicators of dysfunction and whether the processing of such data sets can be expected to identify significant areas for improvement in the clinical context which would lead to significant improvements and cost-savings regarding the diagnosis and treatment of morbidity. In particular, there is not yet an accepted understanding of the mechanisms which are responsible for maintaining the body's highly regulated function therefore the idea that the current plethora of diagnostic tests can be accurate measures of the rate of pathological onset of a particular medical condition(s) is only an assumption and may have significant inherent limitations.The development of the first mathematical model of the autonomic nervous system by Grakov leads us to question basic assumptions upon which modern medicine is based and whether large-scale data mining of available data sets will lead to a better understanding e.g. (i) Is the biomarker the cause or the consequence of the condition? (ii) Does the marker relate to the genotype, phenotype or neither? (iii) How does the brain regulate the autonomic nervous system and the coherent function of the organ networks/physiological systems?

This study aimed to evaluate the progress in reduction of prevalence of anemia in rural Australia. It also investigates the prevalence of hypoviscosity in anaemia with a view to determine the fraction of anaemic patients at risk of drug-inducible exacerbation of anemia. Archived clinical pathology data (N = 130, 354) for the period of 1999 to 2008 were utilized. The prevalence of anemia and hypoviscosity was evaluated by working out (i) the number that fell within anemia definition as a percentage of the population and (ii) the number that fell within hypoviscosity definition as a percentage of anemic patients. The prevalence in anemic diabetes and dyslipidaemia was further determined. There was progressive reduction in anemia from 6.1% to 3.2% over the ten years period. Prevalence of anemia is statistically significantly higher in males than in females (P < 0.0001), but protein level is lower in anemic females than in anemic males (P < 0.01). The results further show that up to 75% of anemic patients may benefit from NSAID or salicylates. This paper highlights differences between genders. It suggests more concerted effort in men's health and speculates a new factor to investigate in women's health.

The medical profession adopts new medical technologies which are deemed necessary to diagnose and treat disease. The current range of technologies allows the clinician to make diagnostic conclusions although the scope, limitations and costs of such diagnostic techniques are often ignored. The aim of this review article is to consider the techniques currently used to diagnose health and to highlight a novel and innovative way of screening the health of the population using a non-invasive cognitive technique.
