Obstructing urethral calculus in a woman revealed to be the cause of chronic pelvic pain

Abstract: Urethral calculi are extremely rarely reported in Caucasian females and are usually associated with an anatomical abnormality such as a diverticulum or a stricture. Ureteric calculi can move to become lodged in the urethra, although this is rare in women because of their short urethral length.

“…26 Calculi Calculi can occur in association with urethral diverticulum or stricture, but rarely may occur de novo in the urethra, where they can cause pain and obstruction. In the case presented by Thomas et al, 27 the obstructing calculus was felt to have descended from the upper urinary tract based on it being composed of calcium oxalate.…”

“…Incarceration of the posterior or fundal leiomyoma beyond the pelvic brim can push the cervix against the pubic bone, resulting in compression of the bladder neck. Urologists must also keep in mind subpubic cartilaginous cyst [22], primary bladder neck obstruction [23] and urethral calculi [24] as possible causes of chronic urinary retention in women. Injuries are usually caused by falling astride a firm object, consensual coitus, sexual assault, cold waxing, and tight clothing [21].…”
