Obsessional scores and subjective general psychiatric complaints of patients with duodenal ulcer or ulcerative colitis

Abstract: SynopsisThe Leyton Obsessional Inventory (LOI), together with 46 questions taken from Sections M–R of the Cornell Medical Index, were administered to 30 inpatients suffering from duodenal ulcer and to 30 patients admitted for ulcerative colitis to test the hypothesis that the latter have more obsessional traits than the former. The results indicated that although the two groups did not differ much in their obsessive personality traits, the ulcerative colitis patients were significantly more worried and concern… Show more

“…Mean trait scores were similar to those of Cooper's (1970) normative group but rather less than mean scores of the orthopaedic patients. Mean scores differed markedly from those of depressed patients (Kendell & DiScipio, 1970) and of Italians with ulcerative colitis or duodenal ulcer (Bellini & Tansella, 1976). These patients were considerably older than the students.…”

“…Differences between Leyton scores of Irish and English subjects suggest that cultural factors may affect obsessional characteristics (Kelleher, 1972). The inventory was used to assess obsessional traits in patients with duodenal ulcer and ulcerative colitis (Bellini & Tansella, 1976), and with anorexia nervosa (Smart et al 1976).…”

“…High obsessional trait scores on the LOI have also been reported for patients with ulcerative colitis (median = 14-5, range = 7-21) and duodenal ulcer (median = 12, range = 1-20) by Bellini & Tansella (1976), and for the Irish orthopaedic patients in his sample (mean = 1115) by Kelleher (1972). Patients with chronic pain have been noted to obtain scores similar to psychiatric out-patients on the obsessionality subtest of the Middlesex Hospital Questionnaire (Woodforde & Merskey, 1972).…”

“…Darüber hinaus sind die Patienten der Meinung, nicht ausreichend Informationen von den professionellen Helfern zu bekommen [11]. [4,13,43,50]. Patienten mit CED werden als alexithymer im Vergleich zu gesunden Personen beschrieben, und das Niveau der Alexithymie scheint, unabhängig von der Krankheitsaktivität, relativ stabil über die Zeit zu bleiben [46,48,49].…”
