Observed Face Mask Use at Six Universities — United States, September–November 2020

Abstract: On February 5, 2021, this report was posted as an MMWR Early Release on the MMWR website (https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr).Approximately 41% of adults aged 18-24 years in the United States are enrolled in a college or university (1). Wearing a face mask can reduce transmission of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) (2), and many colleges and universities mandate mask use in public locations and outdoors when within six feet of others. “…Two studies restricted observations to a grocery store setting with one simply "cross-checking" data among observers and the other reporting only inter-rater reliability [21,22]. The other two investigations included outdoor observation areas, but only one of these examined the reliability of the procedure [23,24]. The results…”

“…Further, issues related to camera placement, quality, maintenance, and functionality can be troublesome especially when focusing on something other than public safety and crime prevention-the most common purposes for surveillance cameras [20]. Direct observation also has been used to describe mask wearing and physical distancing [21][22][23][24]. Although this approach overcomes some of the disadvantages mentioned above, the studies that used it either provided limited or no information regarding its reliability, restricted observations to a few, specific behavior settings (e.g., grocery store), and/or lacked details about the method [21][22][23][24].…”

“…On the contrary, a meta‐analysis suggests that the adverse effects of masking, including skin irritation, discomfort, inconvenience, and cost, are generally minor. 26 The COVID‐19 pandemic has led to increased mask acceptance and has resulted in substantial self‐reported 27 and observed 28 uptake. As COVID‐19 will likely persist for years, mask‐wearing is likely to gain further acceptance moving forward and may prove to be even more efficacious in transplant patients than previously demonstrated.…”
